1. Why is the system so slow??

The system is not particularly slow in general, but two types of operations are indeed very very slow:

• Workflow operations such as starting a workflow and approving a proposal.
• User management operations such as adding or removing users from a group.

Workflow operations being slow seems to be a common problem for SharePoint 2010 SP1. We already tweaked a few system parameters but it didn't make any noticeable difference. At this point there seems to be no solution other than throwing more hardware at it.

We suspect that the slowness of the user management operations is due to the time it takes to access and query the campus Active Directory, and there's nothing we can do about it.
