Mailing ListsThe CSULA ITS department oversees the infrastructure for the Wi-Fi at CSULA. However, sometimes at CSULA the Wi-Fi is spotty and at times very hard to connect to. To improve the Wi-Fi on the CSULA campus, more data is needed to see the problem areas, but no such reporting system exists for Wi-Fi users to report these problem areas.
To remedy this lack of a reporting system, the CS senior design team shall develop a smartphone application that can automatically measure (1) the Wi-Fi signal strength and (2) the location of the smartphone. In addition to measuring these two details, it will also have a way to report these two statistics to a backend database for data collection. This application shall be integrated to be within the current CSULA GETmobile application on both IOS and Android.
The CS senior design team shall also develop a backend server that collects these measurements and stores them in a database. Based off the collected data stored in the database, the mobile application shall show a heatmap that is colored based off the average report in the area (meaning a good connection or lack of reports will color the area green whereas an area with bad reports will show a red surrounding area).
The CS senior design team shall work with the ITS department to detect Wi-Fi blind spots (locations with poor Wi-Fi signals) in the campus and deploy more network infrastructures in those areas to improve the Wi-Fi signal, thus improving the Wi-Fi quality of service on campus.
