The Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation maintains 182 parks across Los Angeles County. People of all ages enjoys these parks, so it is important that they are all properly maintained. The Department of Parks and Recreation does not only maintain our local parks. The department maintains regional parks where one can boat, fish, hike for miles, swim, and more. Nature centers and wildlife sanctuaries allow for the public to learn about native flora and fauna. Included with these sanctuaries are botanical gardens that allow for the public to learn about flora from across the globe. The Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation offers a valuable service to all of those that inhabit Los Angeles County.

Parks and Recreation has a fleet of over 500 vehicles of different makes and models. Currently all vehicles use paper logs for the purpose of tracking vehicle usage and safety checks. This process can be time consuming for the the driver, service personnel, and relies on the accuracy of manually supplied information. The Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation has teamed up with California State University: Los Angeles for a multi-year project to combat these issues.

An automated system will be developed to retrieve information from County motor vehicles. This system is intended to eliminate the paper based process, improve reporting and vehicle maintenance capabilities. An authentication component is also part of the interface for every vehicle. Only employees of Los Angeles County Parks and Recreation should be able to drive the vehicles, so a lockout system will be applied based on the employee's identification. Successful implementation of the system will translate into a reduction of paper waste footprint, improved use of County resources, improved control over maintenance costs, and a simplified process for authorizing and reporting usage of County vehicles.
