Are we allowed to change the order of the variables in 'SENDMORY'?

I don’t think we should do that. In class discussion, professor mentioned it as cheating.

You may change the order of the variables as long as your reason for the change doesn't depend on knowing the solution to the puzzle. For example, you could order the variables based on a path through the puzzle, e.g., YENOM... if you start at the bottom right. But you can't order the variables according to the values they will receive when the puzzle is solved, M first followed by the letter that gets 2, etc.

You can't change the order just because you already know the answer.

We are allowed to change the order if you have a valid mathematical / logical reason just with the given constraints.

I want to change the order based on the columns of the addition (e.g. I started with SMO because that is the first column of the addition). Is that considered valid arrangement?
