I’m Jason, a recent graduate of the IMD Grad program. I'm looking for interns to help turn my thesis, an award-winning educational game about Chemistry, into a full Tablet/PC game. Would you mind sending this out to your students? The internship is paid, and would last for the Spring semester, with the possibility of continuing on for summer. No Chemistry experience is required to work on Covalence.

Internship Positions

Game Development Intern - Unity3d (C#)

We need a programmer interested in scripting the interaction between atoms, allowing for the construction of giant molecules in 3D space. The ideal candidate will be familiar with Unity3D, vector-based movement and quaternion-based rotation. Challenges will include 3D navigation, dealing with rotating forces and creating objects that respond dynamically to external forces. Whoever takes on this task will have the opportunity to craft a unique and complex simulation where the player can manipulate molecules in real time.

Required:

Knowledge of/experience with Quaternions and Vector math

Comprehension of object-oriented programming

Preferred:

Familiarity with Unity3D

Familiarity with C#

 Designer/Level Designer

We need someone to help us make the game feel intuitive and easy to use, someone who’s willing to look from a non-expert point of view and craft levels that illustrate core concepts. A large part of this is communicated through the level design and overall visual style.

Organic Chemistry is an extremely difficult subject to learn from traditional textbooks because it’s difficult to visualize 3D structures, let alone rotate and manipulate and break them apart. But what if textbooks were like strategy guides instead? We’re hoping that, by letting players see the consequences of their actions, we can teach them the “best moves” to apply.

Required:

Interest in educational games

Familiarity with puzzle/crafting games (Minecraft, Bad Piggies, etc.)

Level design/game making experience

Preferred:

Interest in game writing/storytelling

Curiosity about Chemistry

General science background

Experience in educational game development

 About the game

Covalence is an educational game about Chemistry, being built in Unity for PC/Mac and Tablet. It's designed to make Chemistry feel as simple as combining Legos, but at a microscopic level. Simple atoms combine into things like Water and CO2, and those can be broken and re-combined to craft bigger and more complex molecules. Think of it like a molecular Minecraft.

The game has won multiple 'Best in Show' awards at educational games conferences, such as Games + Learning + Society and the International Serious Play Conference. You can play a proof-of-concept build of the game at Covalencegame.com. While it works at its current stage, it is not complete — there is still an opportunity to contribute to the technical and creative design of the project.

Please send resume and cover letter to Jason@positrongames.com with the subject 'Covalence Internship.’
